What is Fiji dance?
Fiji dance performance is many things, and it is constantly evolving. Traditionally called ‘The Meke’, Fijian dance, at its essence, is simply storytelling through dance. We're constantly evolving traditional Fijian dance, called The Meke, to create modern, blended styles that preserve our heritage. We're proud to share this rich cultural dance performance worldwide while staying true to our roots and creative spirit. Fiji is the beating heart of our productions, and we love to share them with the world.
The History of The Meke Fiji Cultural Shows
The history of Meke dance can be traced back to ancient times when it was and still is an essential part of the Fijian way of life. The dances were performed to commemorate important events, celebrate victories, and convey stories of the past and were often performed in conjunction with other traditional practices.
A Fijian meke or dance comes in various forms, each with its own unique style and purpose. A few of the types of Meke dances include:
Vakamalolo Meke
This Fiji dance performance is more tranquil and is usually performed to celebrate important occasions like weddings, births, and welcoming guests. The movements are graceful and fluid, and the dance reflects the joyous moments in Fijian life.
Cibi Meke
The Cibi is a ceremonial war dance often performed before sporting events and international competitions. It involves strong, synchronised movements and is meant to intimidate opponents while showcasing the strength and pride of the Fijian people.
Seasea (Seh-ah seh-ah) Meke
This dance is performed with the accompaniment of traditional instruments like the lali (drum). The “seasea” is a traditional dance performed by women, using fans. It incorporates swift elegant movements and is known for its iconic use of swift kicks and sharp choreography.

Throughout Fiji's history, Meke dance has evolved and adapted to changing cultural and social contexts. The introduction of Christianity and European colonialism has also influenced it. Today, Meke dance performances continue to be a vital part of Fijian culture, passed down through generations to preserve the traditions and stories of the past.
In recent times, Fiji dance styles, including our very own VOU, have gained international recognition. VOU is not just a contemporary Fijian performing arts company; it embodies the essence of 'Fiji now' - an exploration of both old and new, the traditional and contemporary. When VOU was founded, the name itself, 'VOU,' meaning 'new' in Fijian, encapsulated our mission. We aimed not only to perform traditional Fijian Meke dances but also to delve into contemporary Fijian dance as an art form. VOU represents the living embodiment of what it means to be an urban Pacific Islander, harmonising our urban reality with the deep roots of our ancient traditions. In this fusion, we showcase a juxtaposition of cultures, a vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of our heritage and the colours of our evolving identity. VOU is Fijian resilience and creativity, bridging the past and the future, and sharing this dynamic cultural journey with the world.
